Katie and Adam are afraid of love.
She carries the scars of a first kiss gone terribly wrong.
He uproots his life to flee the stinging betrayal of an ex.
When trust is no longer an option, all romance is suspect.
As a young paramedic, Adam rescues people for a living but cannot save himself. Katie, just out of high school, struggles with a tortured home life she cannot escape.
Everything changes when Katie hops into the front seat of Adam’s ambulance. Overwhelmed by what they are feeling, neither possess the confidence to make the first move. They walk away from each other, full of regret.
To find her, Adam risks his future. To be with him, Katie sacrifices her security.
Little do they know, what little time they do have, is being measured by a heartbeat that is slowly dying out.
********ARC received in exchange for an honest review********
In so conflicted about this book. I hadn’t read any reviews for it when Faith emailed me asking to review it so I had no idea there was such a huge twist at the end. I really enjoyed Katie and Adam’s story and then I got to the end and was like “what the hell just happened????” I was completely confused and felt like the whole story I had just read now made no sense what so ever. Luckily, I’m the kind of person that NEEDS to know everything and Faith had already sent me an of ARC of book two and without going in to it in this review, I am now a lot happier with the turn of events. But back to Heartbeat…
Adam and Katie have a brief encounter when the car Katie is travelling in, is involved in an accident and Adam turns up at the scene in the ambulance. Though they didn’t spend a huge amount of time together they both felt a connection. They were drawn to each other and neither could fight it. Things weren’t easy. Adam was running from his past while Katie had to put up with her awful excuse of a father. But sometimes, some things are just meant to be. And your life really can change in a heartbeat.
I liked Adam quite a lot. He’s not your typical book boyfriend. He’s tall, skinny, with over-long blonde hair, and he’s a bit of a loner. But he was really sweet and likeable and hardworking, and he had such strong feelings for Katie that he was willing to risk his career for her! I felt so bad Katie. She sufferers from a weak immune system (as do I) and so gets sick easily and can’t find work. Her Father uses this to his advantage by ruling her life and using emotional abuse as a weapon against her.
Adam and Katie’s story was hard in places, with lots of struggles, but it was super cute. I loved seeing them together and there was a moment in the park that had me swooning and dreamy sighing 😉 And then there was the ending . . . Other than “What the hell did I just read??” I couldn’t really describe what had just happened. It was a majorly dramatic twist that I never in a million years would have expected. I was just so confused!!!!
But I am begging you not to let that put you off. Like I said, I’ve read book 2 Come What May so I would definitely suggest you buy both books at the same time so you can jump in to the next book. I would have given a higher rating but staying true to THIS book, the ending just didn’t sit right with me. But now on to book two . . .
